Significance of Body Mass Index
Although there have been many ideas and debates between researchers from around the globe regarding ideal BMI value and its precise meanings but the WHO and CDC guidelines to date have been according to which the perfect BMI value should be somewhere within 18.6 and 24.9. Anything over 30 is considered to be obese. If your BMI is less than 18, you're underweight. So if your BMI falls below 30, or before 18 or before 18, it's a really good time to reconsider your diet.
Again there has been no agreement on differences between BMI values for men and women. Researchers who aren't satisfied with WHO's and CDC's sloppy figure insist on the idea that in the cases of women , the obesity threshold should be 33. They believe that women generally have more body mass than men. But what they fail to realize is that BMI is not just aimed at measuring physical aesthetics. Research has shown that health risks are equally high when women and males are over 25 kg/m3, thus strengthening the claims in the direction of WHO and CDC.
The Calculation and Relevance of BMI
To calculate the Body Mass Index, we divide the mass of the concerned individual, in kilograms, with the square root of his measurement in metres.
Therefore BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)] 2
